UK Firm Develops Underwater RF Communication System

Wireless Fiber Systems Ltd (WFS) of Scotland claimed the development of a transmission/reception system that enables wireless communication through several to several tens of meters of water or soil.

Electromagnetic waves are used for data transmission.

"We uses almost the same technology as the one used for Bluetooth and other wireless technologies utilizing digital modulation," WFS said.

Water and soil have not been believed to transmit electromagnetic waves. How could the company realize it? How long is the transmission distance? What is the data transmission speed? For what will the system be used?

I interviewed Ian Crowther, general manager of the Environmental & Industrial Division at WFS.

Q: Is underwater communication really possible? What is the radio wave frequency band used by the system? And what is the data transmission speed?

Crowther: Research and development of underwater communication was previously conducted during the period from the 1970s to the 1980s. However, the development was discontinued before it was commercialized because there were only analog technologies at that time, limiting signal processing technologies. Under such circumstances, people began to believe that radio waves do not pass through water.

However, that's not correct. Water is a dielectric that has a relative magnet permeability of about 1 and a dielectric constant as high as 80. Radio waves with frequency less than 1 MHz can transmit through water, although the distance is short.

The "Seatooth" features an underwater transmission speed of 100Kbps and an underwater transmission distance of about 10m. It is equipped with a loop antenna.

By using the latest digital communication technologies, underwater communication is completely possible for some applications. It's not that we developed a special technology. We just noticed its business potential.

The radio frequency used for our system varies depending on devices and applications. Our "Seathooth (model number: S5510)" utilizes frequencies between 100k and 200kHz and is capable of underwater communication with the maximum distance of 10m and at the speed of 100Kbps.

The "Seatext" has an underwater transmission speed of 100bps and an underwater transmission distance of about 30m.

With a higher frequency, the speed of up to 1Mbps is technically possible, and we believe the speed can be boosted to 10Mbps in the future. The name Seatooth comes from the fact that this wireless communication technology is similar to Bluetooth, which features a transmission distance of about 10m and a data transmission speed of several hundred Kbps to 1Mbps.

Meanwhile, the "SeaText" (model number: S1510) uses frequencies less than several kHz and is capable of longer-distance underwater communication with the maximum distance of 30m and at the speed of 100bps. Radio waves reach farther distances in the air, of course, and, therefore, a sensor on the bottom of a shallow pond or sea can communicate with a device on the shore several hundred meters away.
