What is Thermocline?

Water has a tendency to become 'stacked' in layers of various temperature, with the surface layer reacting to sunlight absorption and its heat being churned around by wind and waves.

Below these strata temperatures begin to drop suddenly and considerably - the process known as Thermocline.

Thermocline also occurs where freshwater inlets flow into and mix with the ocean leaving the levels of salinity to layering and thus temperature.

Thermocline can be found at depths from anything between 50m to 1000m. The point where the warm and cold layers merge actually resembles a type of underwater mirage - watching a diver swim through it will make them appear 'blurred'.

In the tropical Pacific, Thermo clocks a shallow 50m. Here, vertical displacements have rather intricate effects during the El Niño-Southern Oscillation or ENSO. This phenomenon occurs when the 'oceanic forces' interact with the 'atmospheric forces'. This strange circulation results in extreme weather patterns which cause, for example, an excess of rain in certain areas and drought in others.

Presently, 90 percent of the earths oceans lie below Thermocline, accept for the polar and sub polar regions. A factor for concern among climate change scientists is that the phenomenon may eventually spread to polar waters.
Thermo-warfare

The phenomenon of Thermocline was predictably harnessed by submarines as a wartime strategy to deflect sonar. They did this by making their calculations in accordance with the speed of sound - as it tends to slow when temperature drops which in turn affects the gradient.

Speed sound gradients embrace 'how and why' the speed of sound may be affected in this way. When sound rays follow a curved path they can be calculated to deflect at the Thermocline, hence the sly combat strategy.
Facilitating rich ecosystem interchange

The barrier between the two layers is so extreme that it actually prevents an interchange of nutrients in ponds and lakes, resulting in a totally separate environment between the two layers namely the lower hypolimnion and the uppermost epilimnion.

Oxygen levels below the Thermocline drop during the course of a season, and at its turn when they interact a 'turnover' occurs.

Here, previously dormant water of the two layers mixes, having an effect on rich biodiversity of the ecosystem, bringing a lot of nutrients to the surface.
